Thearticle “Relationship between interpersonal communication skillsand organizational commitment” was authored by Hassan Matin,Golamreza Jandaghi, Fateme Karimi, and Ali Hamidizadeh. The articlewas published in the European Journal of Social Science in 2010. Thekey issue addressed by this team of authors is the association thatexists between employee commitment to their employer organization andinterpersonal communication skills possessed by the entire workforceas well as the management team. The authors hypothesized that theability of managers to use a combination of interpersonalcommunication skills while engaging employees in different issuesincreases organizational commitment. This argument is founded on thenotion that the ability of people to express themselves andunderstand other people, which is only achieved with the help ofinterpersonal communication skills, increase satisfaction and successat the places of work. This relationship was studied on severalinterpersonal communication skills, including leadership, handling ofconflicts, leadership style, team building, ability to run meetings,promotion of change, conveying message, listening, capacity toprovide reasonable feedback, clarification of expectations, goalsetting, persuading, negotiation, and empowering. Team building wasthe only skill that was shown to be effective in enhancingcommitment.
Aneffective critical analysis should focus on several aspects of thearticle, including the statement of the problem, literature review,hypotheses made by researchers, suitability of the methodology,appropriateness of the findings, and recommendations. In the case ofthe article written by Matin, Jandagni, Karimi & Hamadizadeh(2010) a clear statement of the problem was not made, but it wasevident from the introduction that they intended to investigate theimpact of interpersonal skills on employee commitment.
Inaddition, Matin etal.(2010) managed to use a comprehensive review of literature toidentify the key knowledge gaps in the body of knowledge that existedat the time of conducting the research. The use of a comprehensivereview of literature helped researchers to avoid duplication studiesthat have already been carried.
Theresearchers were also able to generate a set of 13 hypotheses. Thesehypotheses made a significant contribution towards the successfulcompletion of the study because they helped the researchers outlineall anticipated relations. This enhanced the objectivity as well asthe clarity of the research since the findings were expected toconfirm or reject hypotheses that had already been highlighted.Outlining hypotheses is significant because it helps researchersclarify their arguments before they can start the actual process ofcollecting and analyzing data (LeMire, 2010).
Matinetal.(2010) accomplished the purpose of their study by conducting adescriptive survey. The use of survey as the primary researchmethodology is preferred because it increases the level ofrepresentativeness by allowing the researchers to collect data from alarger sample (Choy, 2014). Other benefits of using a surveymethodology include an increase in convenience in data gathering,elimination of subjectivity, and the possibility of getting preciseresults. Therefore, the selection of an effective researchmethodology increased the reliability of the findings reported byMatin etal.(2010).
Additionally,Matin etal.(2010) used a random sampling approach to recruit all participants.This type of sampling approach is preferred because it minimizeschances for the occurrence of bias or researchers’ subjectivity. Byincreasing objectivity, the random sampling technique improved thereliability as well as the credibility of the findings. A sample of102 participants was reasonable and it could sufficiently act as afair representative of the target population of employees as well asthe managers of different organizations.
Thequestionnaire is among the most common tools that are used tofacilitate the process of gathering data. Matin etal.(2010) combined an ordinary questionnaire with Likert’s scale toolin order to ensure that useful data was collected. Most importantly,Matin etal.(2010) confirmed the reliability of their questionnaire by findingthe Chronbach-alpha coefficient before using it in the actual datacollection exercise. Therefore, it is evident that the data used tomake conclusions was reliable.
Matinetal.(2010) used multiple strategies to analyze their data. They combineddeductive and descriptive statistics. The effective use of statisticsto conduct data analysis made it easy for the researchers to test thehypotheses. Matin etal.(2010) also made an effective and clear presentation of the results.They used tables to enhance clarity of data presentation.
Fromthe discussion of the results, Matin etal.(2010) confirmed a hypothesis that team building is the only skillthat increases employee commitment. These results are relevant andapplicable because they make it clear that the management can usedifferent interpersonal communication skills, but employee commitmentcan only be achieved by building strong work teams.
Suggestionfor future research
Matinetal.(2010) relied on the model provided by Robinson and Hansaker toconduct their study, which limited the number of interpersonalcommunication skills that could be considered. It is recommended thatthe future researchers should use a different research model thatwill allow them to include more skills in their studies. This isbecause it is possible that there are other interpersonalcommunication skills that could affect employee commitment, but theywere not included in the study due to limitations caused by the typeof model.
