Thearterial and venous systems contain blood vessels, which make up partof the circulatory system. Functionally, these systems distributeblood containing nutrients, antibodies, oxygen, hormones, andelectrolytes throughout the body (Diogo etal.,2016). Structurally, they are made up of the endothelial linings,circular smooth muscles, and elastic external and internal lamina.Due to these similarities, people confuse the two systems however,they function differently because of their structure and size thatenables them channel blood in reverse directions. The arterial systemchannels oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body withthe exception of the pulmonary artery, whereas, the venous systemdirects deoxygenated blood from the rest of the body to the heartwith the exception of the pulmonary vein (Diogo etal.,2016). They also differ in appearance where the venous system’sveins are blue in color carrying dark red blood while the arterialsystem’s arteries are red distributing bright red blood.Additionally, veins are normally found on the skin’s surface whilearteries are located deep within the body. Structurally, veins havethin non-elastic muscle layers that can collapse and possesssemilunar valves to ensure that blood flows in the requireddirection. In agreement with Diogo etal.(2016), this guarantees the same blood amount leaving the heart viathe arteries returns via the veins. On the other hand, arteries havethicker elastic muscles that are rigid to withstand the bloodpressure from the heart. Consequently, the blood flow within theveins is under low pressure while that in the arteries is under highpressure. Lastly, even though both the venous and arterial systemshave significant similarities they have numerous differences thatshould be appreciated.
