Iwas born and raised in China. My parents held that a sound educationwas crucial to the development of a principled and successful adult.They encouraged me to read books that helped nurture my understandingof the world. For example, my father bought me Ben Carson`s Think Bignovel to inspire confidence in me and help me develop a habit offinding solutions that will help me succeed in life. The book helpedme understand the importance of patience and confidence in succeedingin life.
Iacquired the bigger portion of my education in China. I got mypre-university education (primary, middle and high school) in China,but attended University in Canada. My pre-university education shapedmy understanding of the world profoundly. I came to believe that hardwork and persistence helps a person reach his goals relatively fast.I also believe that success in business is dependent on one`s abilityto find a competitive edge in the market and products that areaffordable to the larger portion of the market populace.
MyUniversity education was my first experience away from home. I hadnever lived away from my parents before. This experience helped memature into a responsible young adult relatively fast. My parents`advice helped me avoid the usual mistakes that young people makeafter they begin living an independent life. I avoided using drugs,engaging with the wrong company, and even attending events that woulddissuade me from concentrating on my education or tempt me to startusing drugs.
TheChinese culture advocates for a strong moral grounding and principlesof self-respect and self-control. Upon reaching America, I witnesseda somewhat strange existence. At one point I thought the Americansociety believed in values that were opposite to those of theChinese. People, in America, loved music that encouraged immoralbehavior events that, in my judgment, were not very moral andenjoyed spending money on products that were not very essential.Everything was very strange, but after some time, I got used to theusual way of life in America.
Aftera few months in Canada, I got a part-time job in a restaurant. Ibegan by waiting tables. However, I desired to be a supervisor oneday, and because of my good work ethics and grounded principles, Iwas certain that would be good at my job. As I waited tables, Iobserved how the supervisor learned and implemented some of thethings that I had learned in my course. To begin with, thesupervisor found a way of motivating unenthusiastic group members. Inmy course, I learned that effective leaders should be dynamic. If amanager, for example, discovers that he or she has been assigned to agroup that is not enthusiastic about its work, he can adopt astricter style of leadership – an autocratic style of leadership(Lester, 1975). Being lenient in such situations can cause more harmthan good.
Also,I realized that a leadership style that works for one group might notwork for another. Cultural factors, for example, may impedeorganizational efficiency. Some cultures believe women cannot work atthe same level with men. This assertion hinders organizationalprinciples such as diversity. In such situations, leaders have toadopt a leadership style that is in line with the culturalinclination of the region they have been attached to (a free-reintype of leadership). Nonetheless, although a leader may try toinstitute some changes, they have to be instituted in leaps andbounds (Lester, 1975).
Ibelieve in self-control. People call me stingy, but I believe inpurchasing products that add value to my life. I realized that theAmerican culture advanced a less than rational approach to spendingmoney. People preferred buying products whose prices had beenexaggerated, assuming that price was in tandem with quality. I didnot see sense in this perception. I believe that everything that onedecides to buy should accrue a profit to him. For example, if onedecides to purchase a car, he should buy it to be more punctual atwork or use it for business otherwise, he should consider using themoney for something else.
SometimesI think I got my business skills from the companies that my familyowns. I enjoy participating in talks that improve the efficiency ofoperations in business. If something leads to losses in anenterprise, I usually advocate for its removal. Also, the knowledge Ihave acquired in my work and my education has helped me develop aunique view of business processes and the world. For example, afterreading some books on management, I came to the understanding thatleaders, who ensure that a team focuses its energy towards therealization of a particular end, achieve massive success (Kouzes andPosner, 2007). Active managers communicate to their team members whatthey believe should be done in a manner that is fair, accurate andstraightforward to understand. Leaders with the ability to inspirethe confidence of their followers gain the power to direct groupenergy toward the most sensitive areas of the organization.
Ialso came to the realization that I have the capacity to learnrelatively fast because I listen to people`s advice. I never turnanyone down because he is less educated than me. In fact, duringstaff meetings at the restaurant, some of my colleagues advancedideas that I had never thought about. Reason being, they interactwith clients regularly and are impacted by the policies implementedat the restaurant. Also, I listened to the complaints lodged bycustomers regarding the quality of services being offered and theirexperience at the hotel. I usually forwarded these complaints to mysupervisor since he was very approachable and courteous.
Myuniversity education helped me understand a few things aboutmanagement. Sometimes companies develop policies that are parallel totheir employees` values, for example, adopting a top-down system ofmanagement. In such a situation, a leader should find a way ofaligning his thinking pattern to that of the organization, butgradually find ways of influencing change within the group(challenging the process) (Kouzes and Posner, 2007). Also,accommodating and respecting other people`s opinions is a valuabletrait. Getting a clouded judgment due to the acquisition of power iseasy. Some managers perceive their workers as being incompetentregarding matters that are critical to the company objectives.However, reminding oneself that everyone`s opinion should be valuedis crucial to helping him remain focused on achieving organizationalmission and vision goals (inspiring a shared vision) (Kouzes andPosner, 2007).
Also,I usually do my research online to find answers to questions orissues that I have challenges dealing with. Such an approach helps mecome up with practical solutions to my problems. During one of myresearches, I came to the realization that integrity takes greaterprecedence over most leadership qualities. Impartiality is a criticalpart of the organization. Leaders who exercise fairness within theorganizational setting motivate team members to work as a team(Russell and Stone, 2006). For example, leaders who exercise prudencethrough the recognition of extra effort by a particular group member,fair treatment of group members, and prudent allocation of resourcesencourage unity among team members.
Asa consequence of my online investigations, I have come to understandhow the behavior of other people can be influenced. Leaders must havecontrol over their followers. Leaders who command authority have thecapacity to direct organizational efforts toward a particular goal(Russell and Stone, 2006). Consequently, my research has helped mefind ways of solving my professional and personal challenges. Forexample, at my workplace, I realized that some workers left theirworkstations before their shift was over. I found this behaviorwanting and took the initiative to advise them against it. To mysurprise, these individuals listened stopped leaving theirworkstations early.
Toaddress the problems facing the organization, I usually ponder on thevarious ways that can be used to address the issue facing the team. Ialways propose the strategies I discover online to my supervisor. Ialso do my research online and seek the input of other people throughcommunication. As I came to understand, communication brings togethergroup effort. Individuals who can communicate their group`s agendaeffectively have the capacity to direct more focus to areas that needattention more practically.
Ina recap of the above discussion, various factors came together toshape my personal worldview. These factors extended to how I work,interact, and even view the world today. My education has played avery significant role to how well everything in my world fitstogether. Through my education, I can seek information regarding mywork efficiently, and, by extension, separate the valuableinformation from the advice that is not in tandem with my needs.
