Socialconstruction is a term that is often coined to refer to theperceptions of the environment and the world around us, especially onmatters regarding social interactions. On the other hand, the racegets defined as a system of categorization of an individual peopleget categorized according to the characteristics of skin complexion, physical traits, and all including but limited to biological andappearance characteristics.
Ethnicityis a system of categorization that focuses on the social aspects ofhuman beings culture and heritage. While discussing issues related tosocial construction, race and ethnicity tend to crop up. In anutshell, the social structure is correlated with ethnicity and race, pointing to the fact that these effects are rather dependent on oneanother.
Accordingto an article published by the New York Times on 25th March 2016,ISIS attacks have claimed so many lives that nearly 1200 people diedoutside Syria and Iraq. The attacks targeted westerners all over theworld as well as those who oppose their existence. For instance, theEuropean race gets hunted down by ISIS, who view them as infidels andnot worthy of living since they keep on opposing their acts ofterrorism.
Socialconstructs of race and ethnicity of the inhabitants of thewesternized countries differ from those of the Islamic states.Through this difference, ISIS view the westerners as racists andopposers of their religion. The notion that all persons from theIslamic faith get termed as terrorists precipitates the emergence ofthese extreme behaviors by members of the ISIS.
The articlestipulates different instances where members of ISIS launched attackson others based on race. For example, on 12th January 2016, ateenager in France attacked a Jewish teacher with a machete andafterward, he told the police that he had carried out the attack inthe name of the Islamic states and God. The Islamic countries opposeChristianity, and the article clearly depicts this by saying that onMarch 2016, in Yemen, gunmen opened fire at a nursing home founded byMother Teresa and run by Christian nuns.
Politicalgrounds act as the basis for the conflict between the Islamic statesand the western countries. The United States is the epicenter of allthe ISIS interests as it is one of the superpower nations thatcontrols most of the westernized region. Racist’s actions and theChristianity religion led to the emergence of ISIS attacks on westernsoil.
The Islamicstates view their religion as the best, based on their beliefs, theyalso embrace matters concerning terorist attacks due to the notionthat when one indulges and dies in war, they get to fulfill theirmission on earth according to Allah’s plans. The social constructsof the Islamic states differ by far, to those of the westernizedcountries.
Accordingto Omi (2015), race is a master of the category.Through it, politicalinstitutions, overall history, culture foundations, and economicinfrastructures of the United States got established and developed(Omi page 106). It would not be an exaggeration to state that racewas and is, the founding bedrock, the United States as well as othernations throughout the world therefore, race and thus itsconsequences are omnipotent and omnipresent. Race does not getconsidered as a transcendent category, but something that is acceptedwidely as social construction. To a considerable extent, the raceprovided and affected the transformation on how people view labor andemployment, work and employees, master and servant (Omi, 2015).
Omi’sopinion on matters regarding racial politics gets based on the factthat, the race gets associated with power, the social constructs ofrace and ethnicity gets molded in a way that directs the society toview certain races and ethnicities as superior to others. Themajority of the Omi’s article opts in onto different facetsregarding the social construction of race by expounding on racialpolitics. At the core of his stance, Omi presents his case whichfocuses on despotism, democracy and hegemony (Omi, page 130). Takethe European colony as an example Omi claims that the Europeanterritory was nothing short of a racial despotism which remainsracially despotic today regarding the progress on empowerment of thepeople of color as well as their political standing.
Socialconstruction on matters related to race led to the creation of“colored line.” The color lines, as the term suggests, wereboundaries that disparaged the colored from the non-colored.Despotism fixed people of color into psyches, thus causing unbearablefear and suffering. Furthermore, slavery was considered as part andparcel of the people of color, which made Europeans pride themselvesas superior beings and painted as their subjects (Omi, 2015).
Omi’s article depicts race and ethnicity as historical constructs. It conquers with the news article on Islamic states and their harshencounters. For example, issues related to color lines also appliedin the Muslim countries since they got termed as people of color.Through this, the harsh treatment of Islam’s precipitates a revoltagainst the westerners.
