Summary:Women,Crime, and Criminal Justice

Intheir article entitled, “TraumaAmong Lesbians and Bisexual Girls in the Juvenile Justice System,”Graziano and Wagner (2011) present a review of research workscovering different aspects of trauma that bisexuals and lesbiansundergo. According to the study, physical abuse, sexual abuse, PTSD,and traumatic stress are likely to be reported by adolescent having ahistory with the juvenile system as opposed to the ones without. Theauthors further argue that delinquency in the course of theadolescence age can have lasting adverse repercussions for mental andphysical wellbeing thereby making the girls susceptible to futurearrests, diminished employment and educational opportunities, dysfunctional parenting, as well as domestic violence. In theirreview, Graziano and Wagner (2011) start by defining the term traumaand PTSD as well as the criteria for PTSD diagnosis, duration of thecondition, and the symptoms witnessed at the onset. The definitionsare referenced to the DSM-IV and the American PsychiatricAssociation. The authors then discuss the types of trauma thatcomprise interpersonal ferocity (physical abuse, terrorism, seriousincidents in addition to wars) and witnessing of these violent acts. The discussion on the types of trauma offers a foundation to delvedeeper into the topic. Graziano and Wagner (2011) suggest that theapproximations of the occurrence of trauma, abuse, as well as PTSDdiffer based on the categories of abuse under assessment. Therefore, the statistics provided are based on the forms of trauma and coverevery area. For instance, the study documents a higher rate ofphysical in addition to sexual abuse among the offending girls asopposed to the delinquent boys. The other finding reported in thisresearch regards the fact that there are no empirical studiesavailable that focuses on the trauma of bisexuals and lesbians in thejustice system. After an overview of the practices and policy thatrelate to lesbians and bisexuals in the justice system, Graziano andWagner (2011) conclude that the bisexuals and lesbians are anoverrepresented group who are at increased risk for becoming youngoffenders.
